Does Abracadabra and Hocus Pocus have Anything to Do with Healing?
Approximately 3-minute reading time

You might be startled to learn that the phrases abracadabra and hocus pocus came from the Hebrew language and are actually slurs and derision of individuals who performed miracles, especially healing. The devil is so fearful of believers grasping the power to heal and cast out demons, he cleverly utilizes any method to discredit prayer and the boldness to speak the word of God.

Act 4:31  And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

Hebrew is an alphanumeric language.  Meaning, letters are used for number.  For example, the first letter of the alphabet is “alef” and has the numerical value of “1” and is also the letter and number of God since  He is one and the only One.  Understanding the numerical value of words will reveal what words are related and amplify their meaning and significance.   It is as though the words have the same DNA.

The numerical value of abracadabra is important.

The term abracadabra crossed over into English usage, and was picked up by showmen who observed Rabbis performing healing who used this word as a sort to incantation.  The word Abra-Kadabra is a Hebrew word and contains the word “bara’ which means “to create”.  The numerical value of the remaining letters adds up to 26 is the numerical value for YHVH (Yehovah) – The name of God. You see the ancient Jews believed that healing came when you invoked the name of God.

Jewish Healers were known as Baal Shems  “masters of the name”.  Priests also functioned as physicians and used prayer, diet, essential oils, and herb.

Sickness was considered a physical manifestation of an illness already taking place in the soul.

Encouraging someone to not see a physician or take medication does not align with church and Jewish tradition of healing.   They understood that illness was not God’s will or purpose and it was to be opposed and resisted.

The Hebrew term “Abra-Kadabra” literally means “I will create as I speak”. Others believe is from “ab”(father) meaning the Father is saying “It will be created in My words”.

Pro 18:21NKJV  Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Isa 57:19 NKJV  "I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near," Says the LORD, "And I will heal him."

The Lord is waiting for us to offer Him  the fruit of our lips so He can create what we speak! The fruit of our  lips is what we speak.  Are we speaking words the Lord can use for His glory that will create peace and healing?

Hebrew priests knew that speaking God's Word in faith was a creative force fulfilling His will.   So abra-kadabra!

Hocus Pocus

This is another phrase we hear often especially to exclaim something is fake and deceiving.  For instance, we might hear “That’s a bunch of hocus pocus”.   Unbelievers and even Christians who do not believe in healing and miracles will accuse a ministry that operates in these gifts of being fake and using mind control, in other words, hocus pocus.

Hocus pocus is a corruption of the genuine Latin words "hoc est corpus meum" which means “for this is my body”.   These words are spoken during the consecration of the Roman Catholic Mass when the wine and wafer are said to be transformed into the body and blood of Christ. Some experts, presumably non-Catholic, think hocus-pocus itself was then corrupted into the word hoax.

Joh 14:12  "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

These twisting of words are cleverly designed strategies by the enemy.  Satan fears the church operating in the “greater works” so he will do whatever it takes to discredit any ministry who operates with authority and power.
