The Secret of “All Things”

Philippians 4:11-13 · Psalm 25:14 · John 16:32-33

Paul says, “I am able to do all things through the one who strengthens me.” We usually read that as a burst of power for a hard moment. But in context, Paul is talking about something deeper: a secret he has learned. It is the ability to be content in every circumstance, whether he is full or hungry, in plenty or in need. The power of “all things” means circumstances lose their ability to steal our peace.

Php 4:12  … I have learned the secret of contentment, whether I go satisfied or hungry, have plenty or nothing.

The secret! Who doesn’t love secrets?  Yet, the Holy Spirit is ready to reveal and teach us all things.

The Hebrew word for secret is sod. It is not a piece of hidden information. It is intimate counsel, the private conversation among close friends, His inner circle. Psalm 25:14 declares, “The secret (sod) of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant.” The secret is not something we figure out. It is something we are told, by Someone who has drawn us close.

Paul wrote these words from prison. His circumstances were not ideal, and I’m sure he wanted out of the cell and the chains. Yet he says, “I am content.” He had learned not to let circumstances dictate his joy.

What contentment is. Godly contentment is a recalibration of our desires to line up with the will and purposes of the Kingdom of Heaven. It produces thankfulness, and thankfulness becomes a lethal weapon against the enemy: a shield and a sword. It lets us walk through suffering and still trust that He rules. Contentment says we are able to wait, and find peace and patience through worship. We can feel hunger and yet know no lack. Jesus said, “I have food you know not of.” He walked in this secret.

What contentment is not. Comfort doesn’t produce growth, and the path of least resistance never leads to contentment. The narrow gate is the secret doorway. It presses against us, and we are transformed into His design. We need the “without” to appreciate the “with.” Without darkness, we would not recognize the light. Without knowing sin, we would never know the sweetness of forgiveness.

So contentment is not something we feel after we become comfortable. It is surrender. Paul sat in prison and still said he was seated in heavenly places.

Where it comes from. Contentment is a result of communion. It is evidence of a relationship, not a skill or a muscle you build. You are drawn into it, into the inner circle where sod is shared. When you learn the secret, you also learn that accomplishments never satisfy. You reach the goal and feel hollow, asking, “What’s next?” There is emptiness, even weakness.

You don’t need more grit to hold on. You need closeness. Strength is the result of closeness to Christ, and that relationship is what lets you withstand distractions.

How we keep it. The secret is to never forget what the Cross has accomplished. The veil is torn, and we have an anchor for our souls inside the Holy of Holies, in the deepest part of God’s heart. Meditating on His word recalibrates our thoughts so that we remember and do not forget.

However, the secret is not how much Scripture we know in our heads. Wisdom does not come from the quantity of information. We can know about God and still not know Him.

Jesus lived this. He told His disciples they would scatter and leave Him alone, “and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.” Then He said, “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Peace is found in Him, not in the absence of tribulation.

The covenant is the answer to both seasons. Paul knew need and he knew abundance, and the same covenant carried him through each. His covenant is our peace in time of trouble, and in time of abundance, our gratitude.

What we must not forget is the simplicity of “Christ is enough.” Lean into His whispers when the circumstances of “without” are shouting.   His covenant will never fail you.
