The Battle For Your Sword

The Battle for Your Sword

What comes out of my mouth matters more than I realize.

My words can wound or heal. They can tear down or build up. Too often, I am unaware of the impact of what I say. A careless word can leave a deep wound. The enemy knows this and loves to use our mouths as his microphone.

The devil understands something many believers forget: our words are swords. Your sword is crucial and the devil fears our skillful use of it. He knows its power.

Maybe it's no coincidence that the word sword contains the word word. That observation only works in English, but the Holy Spirit is trying to emphasize a truth: words are weapons.

The enemy constantly works through circumstances, conversations, and thoughts. He twists situations into something darker than they are. He whispers accusations against God and tries to make us question His goodness and love.

Why?

Because he wants us to hand him our sword which are our words.

Scripture teaches that the sword is part of our spiritual armor. The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. Jesus is pictured with a sharp, two-edged sword proceeding from His mouth. Hebrews tells us that the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, dividing between soul and spirit.

God's Word cuts through confusion. It separates truth from lies. It gives clarity when the battle is intense and strength to hold the line.

Your sword matters!

When I heard the following, I was greatly impacted.

The enemy comes and says:

"You will eventually weaken, and you don't know when. You're afraid of your future."

At the same time, the angels assigned to help us also seek our sword so they can carry out God’s will.

They too acknowledge reality :

"You will eventually weaken, and you don't know when. You're afraid of your future."

The facts sound the same.

So how do we know which voice we're hearing?

The devil adds one more sentence:

"Let me help you."

The angel says:

"I will help you."

The difference is everything.

The battle is not over whether I am weak. The battle is over whose help I will accept.

One voice produces fear, anxiety, and dependence on self.

The other produces peace, trust, and dependence on God.

The moment I heard the difference, my heart settled. Peace flooded my soul. I knew which voice carried the nature of my Savior. There was no doubt of His care for me in every detail.

When my words agree with God's Word, my sword joins His sword.  Angels can then carry out my words as His words.

One fascinating insight is that the Greek definition of the double-edged sword is "two mouths." His mouth speaks truth, and my mouth speaks in agreement and a lethal weapon is formed.

My words become a sword in the hand of the Lord. I speak what He is saying. His purposes advance. His will is released into the earth.

The enemy wants my sword, my words.

God wants my agreement.

And only one of them can hold it.
