Born Again to Breathe Again: Don’t let the devil hijack your breath
The breath is something we rarely pay attention to until we have trouble breathing. We don’t think about our breath until we struggle with it.
When life’s circumstances takes our breath away, the devil comes in to rob, kill, and destroy. He wants one thing, your breath. The enemy can exploit what happens to us. He does that through physical illnesses and through our emotions. Today, we might call some of this dysregulation. We can’t sleep. Eating becomes an issue. We become nervous, anxious, and edgy. This gets our attention. Our bodies are telling us something is wrong.
The ancient Hebrews always knew that the emotions are not just in the mind. They live in the soul and the body. What we are just discovering today has already been written in Scripture. The body already knows what we are just figuring out.
For example, the Hebrew word for anger is “aph” and it is also the word for nose. The connection is significant. The nose is used for breathing. The nostrils will flare when one is angry showing the breath is hard and rapid, deliberate. The ancient Hebrews located anger in the breath, not in the mind.
We are dust plus God’s breath.
All our lives the enemy is focused on removing that breath. The breath that is God’s gift to us. The breath that is His “Ruach”—His Spirit. Satan’s motive is still the same: return man to dust.
Dust is now a metaphor for your old life, the life that was dead and separated from the life of God. But God has breathed into us again. He exhaled His life into our bodies and souls and we became living spirits breathing by His Breath, His Spirit.
Even when satan does not succeed in physically removing it, he is often successful in using it for his own glory and purposes leaving us wounded, impotent, and confused. Our breath can become labored, shallow, and rapid. Our breathing is often a reflection of the conflict in the soul. The enemy uses the challenges of life to “take our breath away.”
As born-again believers, we receive the life-giving Spirit who brings us into the life and freedom we have in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:2 declares that the Spirit of life has set us free from the law of sin and death.
In the realm of sin and death where there is only dust, our breath is hijacked.
The sad thing is we go through life and become accustomed to not breathing correctly and we miss living in the rest of His Ruach, which means His Spirit, His breath. We accept lack, sickness, and curses as though there is no other way out, as though it’s normal. We actually become victims without realizing it.
Our physical breathing patterns reflect this theft and the work of the enemy. He hides so we won’t resist him.
But Jesus came to give us breath again.
He came to breathe upon us His life, His authority, and His power.
He breathed upon the disciples when they were hiding in fear. Joh 20:21-22 …He breathed on them, and said to them, “Peace…Receive the Holy Spirit/Ruach/Breath”.
I can imagine them crowded together, still carrying the fear and uncertainty of what had happened. And then Jesus comes into their fear. He breathes on them. It is almost as if He is saying, “Breathe with Me! Match your breath with Mine. Peace.”
You are born again to breathe again.
Peace is the evidence of His breath. It is effortless. It's just something that is our life regardless of circumstances. It functions the same way our breathing does. It is effortless. We don’t think breathe in, now breathe out. We simply breathe.
It’s a gift. The same is true of the life of the Spirit. God has given you His breath, His peace.
